George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1866-1949) was a philosopher who also excelled as a mystic and spiritual teacher. Born in Armenia, which was then part of the erstwhile Russian Empire, he was fluent in Armenian, Russian, Turkish, and Greek. As a young man, he traveled to Central Asia, Egypt, Iran, India, Tibet, and Rome in search of knowledge and wisdom. Based on these extensive travels, he wrote Meetings with Remarkable Men.
