Monthly Birthday Celebration in School in Ernakulam

Instead of celebrating birthdays of students individually, a government school in Ernakulam district in Kerala has started celebrating birthdays together in a month. A day is selected, usually in the last week of a month, for celebrating the birthdays of all students whose birthdays fall in that particular month. This collective birthday celebration is done by cutting a cake at a function organised in the school hall in the presence of all 146 students of the school They are also served sadya in the afternoon. The innovative idea was implemented by Government Lower Primary School in Eloor in Ernakulam. The school is more than a century old. The school thought of eliminating the economic disparity in birthday celebrations since not all students could afford to celebrate. Teachers raised the funds on their own and through sponsorship, according to headmaster Siby Augustine. The birthday celebration also gives opportunity to take baby steps in public speaking. Students are encouraged to speak a few words wishing their friends who are celebrating their birthday. Birthday celebration of students whose birthdays fall on March and April will have their birthdays celebrated in March before the school closes.
