You no longer have to kill snakes to make leather. Different plant based alternatives are emerging acorss the world and may get good market acceptance. Among the recent launches was India's first-ever handbags made from banana leather. Marketed under the Rashki brand, the company uses banana crop waste to create leather alternative. It is the culmination of R&D and trials that lead to the eco-friendly alternative to leather bags. Last year, French luxury brand Hermes, a leading end leather manufacturer used a leather alternative made out of mushroom for their luxury handbag Victoria. Kanpur based Phool announced a range of bags in partnership with PVH Corporation. The bags will be made with Fleather, an interesting animal leather alternative made from flower waste. India's sustainable fashion market is poised to grow at a CAGR of 10.6% for the period 2021-2026. Eco friendly alternatives to leather can reduce water and carbon footprint by 85%.
