Undetected Visual-Spatial Learning Disorders

Parent Interventions

Prevalence ofnon-verbal learning ability or NVLD in children may be higher than thought and this causes problems with their visual-spatial processing. Such children have verbal skills and have no difficulty in reading. Presence of NVLD can cause problems with mathematics, executive function, and fine motor and social skills. Such children might shy away from doing jigsaw puzzles or playing with Legos, according to Amy E Margolis, PhD, assistant professor of medical psychology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. They may also have trouble tying their shoes, using scissors or learning routes or schedules. A study of 2596 children in the 6 to 19 age group in US and Canada revealed that 3 to 4% children tend to suffer from NLVD.
