Reduce Inequalities in the Education Sector- a Report by UNESCO
UNESCO’s new Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report shows that many countries lack adequate regulations on private education or the capacity to enforce them undermining quality and potentially widening the educational divide between rich and poor. The report points out that there is a growing inequality and exclusion in the education sector as education is being privatised by the states.
There are many countries where the families have to borrow money to afford their children’s education. The impact of Covid-19 has furthermore made situations worse where the increasing education expenditure is unaffordable by the family. UNESCO also demands that there should be a minimum standard set so that quality education is accessible to the disadvantage student also.
They place five recommendations, which are as follows
Guarantee free, publicly funded access to a year of pre-primary and 12 years of primary and secondary education for all children and young people.
Establish quality standards that make education accessible for all learners.
Monitor and enforce regulations to prevent misconduct in governance of education.
Eliminate education from narrow vested interest and make it easily accessible to the underprivileged in the society.
