No Academic Freedom for Ghana Varsities

International Edu News

The academic freedom of Ghana Universities may be lost with the introduction of Public University Bill (PUB). This seeks to regulate all 24 public universities under a single act of Parliament. The new regulation comes after a demonstration at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) turned violent resulting in damage to property. The Vice Chancellor was dismissed and a governing council was set up by the government in October 2018. Impasse with the government over functioning of Technical Universities which were created by converting polytechnics. The PUB is being resisted by teachers’ unions as government tries to seek control using the Article 70 (1)(iv) of the Constitution.
