New Teaching Approach to History in Hong Kong
Hong Kong students will learn history with a new emphasis on national security and territorial integrity, according to new guidelines issued by Education Bureau. The topics covered will include subject matter such as the unification of China under the Qin emperor (259-210 BC) and the opium wars in the 19th century, but with a focus on how such events highlighted the importance of national security. The syllabus framework for Chinese history and related subjects has also recommended that schools hold activities such as appreciation sessions for patriotic songs on the Sino-Japanese war between 1937and 1945. Earlier this year Hong Kong had ordered schools to adopt a more patriotic curriculum from Kindergarten making it mandatory for children to learn national security law and offenses.
