Digital Tool to Detect Fake News

Teacher Insights

Researchers at Uppsala University have developed a digital self-test tool that can be used by students to identify fake news, images, and videos in social media. The tool was also found to improve the students’ ability to apply critical thinking to digital sources. The tool is structured in a way that allows students to work with it, online, on their won. They get to see news articles in a social-media format, with pictures or videos, and the task is to determine how credible they are. Students can check the authenticity of the statements or images – by opening a new window and doing a separate search alongside the test, or doing a reverse image search, for example. Students get feedback on their performance too.
