IN PERIYAR WITH VICTOR GEORGE

Summer showers!
monkeys up the tree
blissfully dripping!
O windblown shadows!
If only
We too had sails...
After the hot climb
We quenched our thirst,
Palms cupped prayerfully
In a mountain stream.
We rounded the rock
At peak of the mountain and saw
A sunlit valley!
And at noon we had
Kanji, pickles, papad,
A dash of salt.
Between a siesta,
The four of us
Split the afternoon.
I saw it for four seconds--
Certainly not five--if not three--
A tiger, prowling...
That when we were young
And victor too was with us
Huddled round a fire.

O windblown shadows!

After the hot climb
We quenched our thirst,
